Canine Creek: a story of survival

The last few years have been a rocky ride for Susie Atherton and her business Canine Creek. She shared her story — and her appreciation for support from her customers and other Tehachapi residents — during the April meeting of the Greater Tehachapi Economic Development Council.
Atherton was introduced by Michelle Vance, economic development coordinator for the City of Tehachapi and secretary to the GTEDC. Vance said Atherton’s inspirational story shows how Tehachapi pulls together as a community and how a small business person can persevere.

Canine Creek started in 2004 as a dog-washing facility without retail, but expanded to include dog food and supplies as customers asked for more products. The business has been honored many times including 2006 Small Business of the Year by the Greater Tehachapi Chamber of Commerce and in several categories of the Best of Tehachapi Reader’s Choice Poll by the Tehachapi News since 2010.

The international publication Pet Product News has recognized Atherton’s success in Tehachapi three times including 2009 Retailer of the Year.

But there were challenges. She had outgrown her original space at Tucker Road and Valley Boulevard, struggled through a battle over mitigation fees at another shopping center and ended up in an expensive lease on East Tehachapi Boulevard.

At the time, Atherton#39;s business was thriving, and she had an entrenched presence in the community, including four years worth of spearheading the dog park at Meadowbrook Park, which opened in 2008, and serving as a board member on the Greater Tehachapi Chamber of Commerce.

In 2011, her husband got a job in Seattle and they relocated. Atherton said she had plans to operate her business remotely but didn#39;t work so well.

It was just a disaster, sort of like when you pulled me out of Tehachapi away from my business, my friends and my town, that#39;s when everything fell apart, Atherton said.

She said she moved back to Tehachapi, when divorce proceedings began and she found herself cut off from joint credit cards.

As a small business owner, this put a strain on her ability to do business. Her suppliers did extend her credit so she could continue ordering pet food.

In the summer of 2012 Atherton discovered she had breast cancer.

I had a store I could barely afford, my credit had been cut off and now I had cancer, Atherton said. I said to myself if I had cancer, I was going to shut down my business because I have no resources; I#39;m sick, what am I going to do?

Community Support

When she had about seven months left on her lease, things began to turn around for Atherton.One customer contact offered a no-interest $15,000 cash loan, and a second offer followed.

Things began to come full circle. In January 2013, Atherton signed a new lease for a location at 798 Tucker Road, four days after her radiation treatments, ending up in the same complex where she started her business.

She said community support was what helped her through the rough patch, including helping to fix up her current location on Tucker Road.

She decided to persevere, despite later going under breast reconstruction and a full hysterectomy. She felt an obligation to her staff and her customers to keep going, in part because of the support shown and because the role her business played in the community.

I#39;ve had customers come in come in crying just to tell us their dog had died, and that#39;s just because we have a connection with our customers and they have become friends, Atherton said.

In the last year, Atherton said she#39;s managed to pay back everyone who#39;s loaned her money through the transition, credit has been paid off, along with most of her medical bills.

Canine Creek is cash-positive and going strong, she said.

Her successful fight in cancer prompted her to start the Party for Pink event at Souza#39;s Winery in 2012 to help raise awareness about and funds to fight breast cancer. Four years later, it continues. She#39;s worked with Links for Life, a Tehachapi organization that provides free mammograms to women.

I wanted to turn my pain into something positive, share my experiences and try to help other people, Atherton said.

She said her community involvement led full circle back to the community helping her out.
When I was going through the hardest times, my employees ran the store, people brought me food at home and people loaned me money, even those who couldn#39;t afford to, Atherton said. Honestly, my business would not be here now if it weren#39;t for many, many people in Tehachapi.

The changes are aimed at improving and streamlining administrative processes, providing better flexibility, more repayment options and giving producers easier access to the program.

Our Government remains committed to supporting Canadas producers and our world-class agriculture industry to ensure it remains competitive on world markets, said Minister Ritz. Weve improved the Advance Payments Program to give farmers a more flexible tool to manage their cash flow, while cutting red tape and improving efficiency.

In late February 2015, the federal government announced the Agricultural Growth Act, also known as Bill C-18 was coming into effect. The Act allowed for improvements to the Advance Payments Program and modernized and made federal agriculture legislation stronger.

Some of the new changes to the APP will be effective April 1, 2015 and include:

  • Producers can receive commodity advances through one application
  • Producers do not have to be primarily occupied in farming

The Canadian government has also laid out some targets for 2016, including:

  • More options for producers to secure an APP advance
  • Flexibility for repayment methods

Representatives from different areas of agriculture are looking forward to what the new changes have in store.

Two given bail in Kanye shootout case

Pleading with the magistrate to deny the four men bail, Maleke said the state was not yet confident about the strength of its case and needed more time to investigate.

This matter is being treated as a matter of urgency and we assure the court that the results will be available in two weeks, he said.

However, the accused lawyer Aobakwe Monamo, said the prosecutor had failed to explain to the court what he feared would happen if the men were granted bail. Monamo further said the accused persons were innocent till proven guilty and had been in custody since January 29.The state previously told the court that the only thing that is keeping the accused persons in prison is because they were waiting for the blood samples. They got them and there is no reason for these men to wait for the results in prison, he said. Monamo also conceded that the accused would not interfere with investigations.
The four men are alleged to have robbed a cash loan business office at gunpoint in Kanye, before engaging in a shootout with the police. They are faced with five counts including armed robbery, murder, attempted murder, unlawful possession of firearms and ammunitions.

Cora grows angry when she feels shunned by the Carters and by Abi, who visits Dot in prison instead of supporting Cora. Having discovered Dot is refusing to go to Jim’s funeral, Cora visits a surprised Dot in prison, and it doesn’t take long for the pair to argue. However, they soon come to a mutual understanding of each other’s grief, but have Cora’s words convinced Dot to attend Jim’s funeral?
